Examples of what to ask:
∙ Workers Comp coverage or a certificate of self-insured: "Work related injures on your property from the unlicensed contractor can force you to become an employer, thereby becoming responsible for the injury."

General liability coverage: "Operating without insurance can lead to financial hardships."

Contractor advertisement:
"The (CSLB) Stipulates - Contractors are required by law to display on their vehicle; their license number, registered fictitious name, address, and phone number."

∙ Know who you're dealing with. (BBB) and (CSLB) Credentials help to "document their stability, reliability, performance, and credibility."

∙ Contractors State License, and Workers Comp maybe required for the type of work performed: If the contractor intends on using pieceworker's; ask if they are insured employees, insured subcontractor's, or an insured independent contractor. Understand that "If the worker is injured while on the project; You could be paying their medical bills as well as unemployment benefits to include but not limited to long term disability benefits."

∙ Review photos of their similar type projects, and call for references. "Pictures are worth a thousand words."

∙ Review their scope of work details. "Understand what you're paying for!"

Before you hire; demand to be named as Additional Insured under the General Liability Policy, "just in case you hired the wrong contractor!"
